Tatooing and Body Piercing

By Frank Hammond

“You shall not make any cutting in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:28).

The context of this passage refers to the Israelites coming into the land of Canaan, and Moses was warning them not to take on the customs of the heathen people. They are not to “practice divination or sooth-saying”(v.26) or be involved in any idolatrous practices, among which are “cuttings in your flesh” and “tattoos”. Cutting the flesh was an unnatural disfigurement of the body common in times of mourning among people of the East.

The priests of Baal cut themselves “as was their custom” to seek favor from or propitiate their idolatrous god. (I Kings 18:28).

Tattooing and body piercing involve more than art. What is behind these activities? At the root there is always pagan idolatry and mysticism. So, these are spiritual activities that give opportunity for demonic infiltration.

Tattooing indicates allegiance to a deity. Soldiers and slaves were tattooed to show allegiance to their superiors and masters. Tattoos are symbols of servitude. (Compare piercing the ear as the mark of slavery: Exodus 21:5,6; Deuteronomy 15:17)

Interestingly, the Greek word for “mark” or “tattoo” is stigma, a common English word of the same spelling which means “to disgrace, defame or ruin one’s reputation”.

In the “1990’s the beginning of the fad of tattooing mushroomed. We see tattoos everywhere we look, and it is not just the young people, but the professionals, middle-class, middle-aged, celebrities, athletes, and you name it, are caught up in this fad.

Since our involvement in deliverance in the ‘60’s, we have known that tattoos and body piercing give place to the devil. We have ministered deliverance related to the pictures, symbols, desecration of the body and soul-ties involved with tattoos, and we have broken soul-ties and enslavement related to pierced ears.

William Sudduth, of Righteous Acts Ministries, has recently published a book, "What’s Behind the Ink? - Tattooing, Piercing and Other Fads", which we enthusiastically recommend, and from which, by permission, quote the following excerpts:

“A Harris Poll, done in 2003...estimates that 16% of all Americans, over 45 million people, now have one or more tattoos...36% of people age 25-39 have one or more tattoos. And 28% of Americans 30 to 39 have tattoos.”

‘‘Dr. Robert Raspa cited the following psychiatric conditions as associated with tattoos:
‘Impulsiveness, low self-esteem, lack of self-control, homosexual orientation, sexual sadomasochism, bondage, fetishism, bisexuality, lesbianism, antisocial personality, borderline personality disorder, schizo-typical personality disorder, mania and bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.’”

According to a study done by Timothy Roberts, a pediatrician at The University of Rochester Children’s Hospital:

“Today’s tattooed young people are nearly four times more likely to engage in sexual intercourse. They are also over two times more likely to experience alcohol related problems, use illegal drugs, express violent behavior, and drop out of high school.”

“Throughout history the cutting of the flesh, and blood-letting were rituals performed to unleash supernatural powers. There’s no doubt that cutting, piercing and tattooing are all connected to the satanic and demonic practices of blood-letting and magic... The magical and spiritual significance of cutting and piercing is the very reason for God’s prohibition in Leviticus against cutting the body and the letting of blood.”

“It is obvious from the history and current studies that piercing is a ‘not so subtle’ form of rebellion. It is rebellion against societal norms, against authority, and ultimately rebellion against God.”

“Tattooing and piercing are invasive procedures that can result in serious skin and blood infections. Dr. Bob Hale at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, says that four million Americans are currently inflected with hepatitis C; and, it’s on the increase! Hepatitis C now kills over 10,000 people year in our nation. We found that commercially acquired tattoos counted for more than twice as many hepatitis C infections as injection-drug use. People who get tattooed in a commercial tattoo parlor were nine times more likely to get hepatitis C.”

“Interestingly enough the latest fad in tattoos is actually tattoo removal! Over 50% of everyone receiving a tattoo want it removed. A $25 tattoo might cost $5,000 to remove.”

“Before you let that ink ‘mark’ you for the reset of your life, think very carefully about the possible risks to your health. Also consider the spiritual and social consequences, namely, both tattoos and piercing could damage current or future relationships. This could include friends, spouses, parents, teachers, and employers. Certain jobs will never be available to people who have visible body art.”

“There is absolutely no such thing as a Christian tattoo. In fact the mere term ‘Christian tattoo’ is, at best, an oxymoron; namely, the widespread practice, acceptance and popularity of body modification which definitely says, ‘My body belongs to me, not to God!’

Yet Scripture tells us:

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with you body’” (I Corinthians 6:19,20 {NIV}).

Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit

– Matthew 12:22-32:

[22]Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. [23] And all the people were amazed, and said, "Can this be the Son of David?" [24] But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons."
[25] Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. [26] And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? [27] And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
[28] But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
[29] Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. [30] Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
31] Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. [32] And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come (ESV).

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit involves attributing the ministry and miraculous kingdom power of the Holy Spirit (such as authority to drive out demons and having power to heal the sick, (Cf. Vv. 22-24, 28) to Satan rather than to God.

It involves a deliberate rejection of the Holy Spirit’s witness to Christ and the Gospel.

Note that in this context, it was not ‘sinners” (Cf. 9:10-11) who were committing this sin, but rather the “spiritual leaders of Israel (Cf. Vv. 24, 34).

The process leading to “blasphemy against the Spirit” is as follows:

1. Grieving the Spirit (Ephesians. 4:30), if ongoing, leads to resisting the Spirit;

2. Resisting the Spirit (Acts 7:51) leads to putting out the Spirit’s fire;

3. Putting out the Spirit’s fire (1 Thessalonians 5:19), leads to hardening the heart;

4. Hardening the heart (Hebrews. 3:8-13) leads to a depraved mind and to a labeling of good as evil and evil as good (Isaiah. 5:20; Romans 1:28).

When this hardening of the heart reaches a certain fullness of development, determined only by God, the Spirit will no longer strive to lead that person to repentance
(Cf.: Genesis 6:3; Deuteronomy 29:18-21; 1 Samuel 2:25; and Proverbs 29:1).

No one can continue in sin and reject God’s grace, mercy, and love without eventually suffering irreparably for it and having God cut them off in judgment.

For those worried, however, about having committed the unpardonable sin, the very fact of wanting to be forgiven and the willingness to repent of sin, is evidence that that one has not committed the unpardonable sin. Glory!

God In The Midst Of Your Problems

1 Corinthians 10:13;

"No temptation (Greek: trial or testing) has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

If you are in the midst of a problem, bring God into the problem with you by repentance and genuine praise. That is, get right with God, and praise Him in the problem. If you are saved, the very fact that there is a problem means there is an escape. Look at the scripture again: “God is faithful….but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape.” With the trial comes a way out. It matters not why you are in the problem. If Satan has turned up the heat in you life, it is with God’s permission. It is possible, as in the case of Paul, that God has sent a messenger of Satan to buffet you. Perhaps He is pruning, breaking, shaping, molding, remaking you into the image of His dear Son, Jesus. Regardless of the reason, what Satan means for evil (like Joseph in the O.T.), God intends for good in the life of His Children. Praise Him in the problem.

The idea is not to get out of the problem, but to get God in the problem with you and to see that He receives maximum glory. Again, the idea is to praise Him in the problem – not when you get out. Note again, the last part of the quoted verse above: “…that you may be able to endure it.” Then He will give you grace to endure it, for He knows what you are able to endure/bear. Circumstances may say to you that it’s over. And Satan will try to tell you in many different ways it is over. But as Yogi Berra used to say: “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” And our God has the last Word in the matter.
